Description :

Based on the award-winning biography “Marie Antoinette: The Journey” by British author, Lady Antonia Fraser, “Marie Antoinette” is a sympathetic account of the private life of the last queen of France before the Revolution.

Sent from her native Austria at the age of fourteen as part of an arranged marriage which will hopefully bring peace between France and Austria, Marie-Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst) must adapt to the rigid and unfamiliar etiquette of the decadent court of Versailles and fulfil her duty to provide France with the next heir to the throne. Initially, she has to overcome the awkward indifference of her young husband Louis (Jason Schwartzman) and survive a feud with the king’s mistress (Asia Argento.) Frustrated by the failure of her marriage, Marie Antoinette seeks comfort in a reckless series of parties, balls, banquets and spends a fortune on shoes, jewellery and her beauty regime. She is spurred on in her pursuit of pleasure by the decadent society beauty, the duchesse de Polignac (Rose Byrne) and her more serious and prudish companion, the princesse de Lamballe (Mary Nighy.) There is also the issue of her infatuation with a handsome Swedish soldier, count Fersen (Jamie Dornan.)

Description :

There were five Marines and one Navy Corpsman photographed raising the U.S. flag on Mt. Suribachi by Joe Rosenthal on February 23, 1945. “Flags of Our Fathers” is the story of three of the six surviving servicemen, John “Doc” Bradley (Ryan Phillippe), Pvt. Rene Gagnon (Jesse Bradford), and Pvt. Ira Hayes (Adam Beach), who fought in the battle to take Iwo Jima. The picture became one of the most famous images of the U.S. winning a battle during WWII. However, the battle for Iwo Jima raged on for another month with three of the marines being killed in action. The other three servicemen were taken out of battle and flown back to the states. The photo made these men heroes, and the government used these new heroes to promote the selling of war bonds on the War Bond Tour. The three men did not believe they were heroes, even though the American public did.

Copying Beethoven 2006

Description :

Copying Beethoven is a period drama about the last year of Beethoven(Ed Harris)’s life. The opening scene shows a dying Ludwig van Beethoven. Anna Holz (Diane Kruger) is witness to that moment. Immediately the emotional intensity of their relationship becomes clear. The story takes us back to the moment Wenzel Schlemmer (Ralph Riach), Beethoven’s publisher, is desparate for a good copyist to help Beethoven complete the score in time for the first performance of his Ninth Symphony. Anna Holz (a fictional character, probably named after a good friend of Beethoven at the end of his life: Karl Holz), being the best copyist available is introduced to Beethoven. And although he is shocked at first expecting a male copyist they start working very well together and Anna helps Beethoven to conduct the impressive premiere of his last symphony. Meanwhile Martin Bauer (Matthew Goode), the love interest of Anna, is working on the design of a new bridge. Martin works with his brain. Beethoven is devoted to the human heart and soul. Anna is caught in between. When Beethoven helps Martin to ‘improve the design of his bridge’ by smashing the maquette in pieces and comments very rude to one of Anna’s own compositions she leaves him. He begs her to come back appologising to her. She gives in recognizing that art and love cannot be controlled by ratio. They keep working together on Beethoven’s as well as on Anna’s compositons until his death. As a subplot we see Beethoven struggling with his nephew, Karl van Beethoven (Joe Anderson). Karl avoids contact with his uncle because he cannot live up to Ludwig’s hope for a worthy successor. But he also avoids Beethoven because he steals money to pay off his gambling depts.
